Getting started
What is Chip's Jack Machine?
Chip's Jack Machine is a classic Chicago-house drum machine with 11 voices: kick, snare, low tom, mid tom, hi tom, clap, closed hi-hat, open hi-hat, ride, crash, and cowbell. Program beats on a step sequencer with up to 32 steps, arrange them into scenes, dial in swing, and export your work as audio files.
How do I create my first beat?
Select a voice (e.g., kick) from the voice selector, then tap the steps in the sequencer grid to toggle them on or off. Hit Play to hear your pattern. Layer in more voices — add a clap on the 2 and 4, hi-hats on every step, and you've got a groove going.
What does the step count do?
You can set each pattern from 1 to 32 steps. The default 16-step pattern gives you a standard one-bar loop. Use shorter lengths for polyrhythmic effects or longer patterns for extended grooves.
Creating patterns
How do I adjust velocity or accents on individual steps?
Tap and hold a step (or use the velocity editor) to set its velocity level. Accented steps hit harder and cut through the mix. This is key for adding dynamics — a slightly softer ghost snare before the main hit makes a big difference.
What is swing and how do I use it?
Swing shifts the timing of off-beat steps to create a shuffle feel. Turn the swing knob up from 50% (straight) toward higher values for more bounce. Classic house grooves typically sit between 54% and 62%.
Can I copy or duplicate a pattern?
Yes. Use the pattern management options to copy an existing pattern and paste it into a new slot. This is handy for creating variations — duplicate your main beat, then add or remove a few hits.
Features
What are scenes?
Scenes let you chain multiple patterns into an arrangement. Create a scene for your intro, verse, chorus, and breakdown, then play through them in order. This turns individual loops into a full track.
How do I export audio?
Use the export function to render your pattern or scene arrangement as an audio file. You can share the exported file to other apps, AirDrop it, or save it to Files for use in your DAW or music projects.
Can I use exported audio in my own music?
Yes. Beats you create in the App are your content. You own the audio you export and can use it in your productions, releases, or any other project.
How many voices are available?
The App includes 11 drum voices: kick, snare, low tom, mid tom, hi tom, clap, closed hi-hat, open hi-hat, ride, crash, and cowbell. Each voice has its own row in the step sequencer.
Subscription & purchases
How does the subscription work?
Chip's Jack Machine offers subscription-based access to premium features. Subscriptions are auto-renewing and processed through Apple. You can view pricing and subscribe from within the App.
How do I cancel or manage my subscription?
On your device: Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions → Chip's Jack Machine. Cancel at least 24 hours before the current period ends to avoid the next charge.
I paid but premium features aren't unlocked.
Tap Restore Purchases in the App. Make sure you're signed in with the same Apple ID used to subscribe.
Refunds
All purchases are handled by Apple. Request refunds at reportaproblem.apple.com — we can't process them on Apple's behalf.
Troubleshooting
The App crashed or froze.
Force-quit the App and reopen it. If the issue persists, make sure you're running the latest version from the App Store. Restarting your device can also help clear up audio-related issues.
I can't hear any sound.
Check that your device isn't in Silent mode (flip the side switch). Make sure the volume is up and no Bluetooth audio device is unexpectedly connected. If using headphones, try unplugging and replugging them.
My patterns disappeared after updating.
Patterns are stored locally on your device. If you deleted and reinstalled the App, locally stored data is removed. We recommend exporting important patterns as audio before removing the App.
Where is my data stored?
All data — patterns, scenes, settings — is stored locally on your device. Nothing is uploaded to the cloud. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
