Getting started
What is Brobbey Afro Percussion?
Brobbey Afro Percussion is a traditional Ghanaian and West-African percussion ensemble instrument featuring 16 voices. It supports polyrhythm and polymeter — each voice can have its own independent loop length — and includes the Rhythmic Intelligence Engine (RIE), a self-generating ensemble mode that creates evolving rhythmic patterns rooted in West-African traditions.
How do I play a basic pattern?
Select a voice from the 16 available percussion instruments. Tap steps in the sequencer to place hits, then press play. Layer multiple voices to build up your ensemble. Each voice plays its pattern simultaneously, creating the interlocking rhythmic textures characteristic of West-African drumming.
What voices are included?
The App includes 16 percussion voices drawn from traditional Ghanaian and West-African instruments. Each voice is authentic to the ensemble tradition and can be independently programmed with its own pattern, loop length, and dynamics.
Polyrhythm & polymeter
What is the difference between polyrhythm and polymeter?
Polyrhythm is when multiple rhythmic groupings play simultaneously against a shared pulse — for example, three beats in the same space as four. Polymeter is when voices have different loop lengths and cycle independently, creating patterns that shift against each other over time. Brobbey supports both.
How do I set independent loop lengths per voice?
Each voice has its own loop-length control. Set one voice to 12 steps, another to 16, and a third to 7 — they all run simultaneously at the same tempo, creating naturally evolving polymetric patterns that shift and realign over time.
My patterns sound “off” — is that intentional?
If you have voices with different loop lengths, the combined pattern will shift and evolve on each cycle — that is polymeter working as intended. The patterns will eventually realign based on the mathematical relationship between the loop lengths. This is fundamental to many West-African rhythmic traditions.
Rhythmic Intelligence Engine (RIE)
What is RIE?
The Rhythmic Intelligence Engine is a self-generating ensemble and conductor mode. It creates evolving percussion arrangements rooted in traditional West-African rhythmic structures. Think of it as a virtual ensemble leader that composes and guides the percussion section in real time.
How do I use RIE?
Activate the RIE mode from the main interface. The engine will begin generating patterns across the available voices. You can influence the output by adjusting density, complexity, and which voices participate. RIE is designed for both creative exploration and learning about traditional rhythmic structures.
Can I learn about the traditions behind the rhythms?
Yes. RIE includes an educational angle, providing context about the Ghanaian and West-African percussion traditions it draws from. As it generates patterns, you can explore how different voices interact within the ensemble tradition and understand the cultural roots of the rhythmic structures.
Subscriptions & purchases
How does the subscription work?
Brobbey Afro Percussion offers auto-renewing subscriptions through Apple. Payment is charged to your Apple ID, and subscriptions renew automatically unless you turn off auto-renew at least 24 hours before the current period ends.
How do I manage or cancel my subscription?
On your device: Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions → Brobbey Afro Percussion. Cancel at least 24 hours before the period ends to avoid the next charge.
I paid but features aren't unlocked / I reinstalled the app.
Open the upgrade screen and tap Restore Purchases. Make sure you're signed in with the same Apple ID used to buy.
How do I get a refund?
All purchases are handled by Apple. Request refunds at reportaproblem.apple.com — we can't process them on Apple's behalf.
Troubleshooting
The app is not producing sound.
Check that your device is not in silent mode (the physical mute switch on the side of your iPhone/iPad). Also check your volume level and make sure no Bluetooth audio device is connected that might be receiving the output. Try closing and reopening the app.
Playback is stuttering or lagging.
Close other apps running in the background to free up system resources. If you have many voices with complex polymetric patterns active simultaneously, try reducing the number of active voices. Make sure your device is running the latest version of iOS.
Where is my data stored?
All your patterns, sequences, and settings are stored locally on your device. We do not operate servers that store your data. See our Privacy Policy for details. Deleting the app will remove all locally stored data.
